Spring Break

Well, spring break has begun. I felt some pressure today to get the kids out and 'do something'... but I resisted. After all, it's spring BREAK. The kids have been fairly low key today... they spent a long time hiding in the space behind Coralie's futon (something I'd actually rather they not do, as I'm paranoid about it falling on them), playing and reading books quietly. Right now, they are watching 'Jumanji'... it's a bit scary to them, but they insist on watching it. I think it's not 'scary/nightmare' scary, but more like 'fun' scary.

Coralie started reading one of the 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' books... my husband took her to the book store, and I think they picked one at random, because it's not the first one in the series. Oh well... I am fairly sure that some of the content is not entirely appropriate for a 7 year old, but at the same time, when it comes to books I am not going to be the 'book police'. It's not like she's reading porn or something. Anyway, I think the 'diary' format is a good introduction to reading chapter books.

We went to the aquarium store today, to get a high-output light fixture and some plants for the new fish tank. I sure hope that will be the last large expense on this adventure. HO lights are not cheap. :-/ Hopefully in a couple of weeks, we'll be able to add some fish.

We're having chili for dinner (much to the dismay of my children), and hopefully a low key evening.

In my experience with middle grade books (like Diary of a Wimpy Kid), younger kids just don't pay attention to the stuff they're too young to understand. It *really* helps reading, vocabulary and stuff, though, to keep reading older books.
