Cars Suck

On Sunday, the Exploder bit the dust. The old rattletrap heaved a last sigh. Now, it's been towed to the repair shop so they can tell us what's wrong with it, except that we probably aren't going to fix it. So far, it is going to cost us $400 to find out what the problem is, but if it's not a cheap (ha) fix we're sending it to the Great Beyond because it's an old POS. (!) This was The Husband's decision... I'm fairly certain it is a testosterone-related issue. Frankly, I don't care what's wrong with it, I just want to be rid of it.
Which brings us to the next issue: what to do about a car when you have no $. My mother-in-law has offered to give us theirs (coincidentally, another Exploder, but newer), however, we're fairly certain that it is because she wants a new car. We're also fairly certain that my father-in-law does not want a new car. So, not sure we want to go there, but still, I mean, it's FREE. It's less than 10 years old and has less than 80,000 miles on it. Tempting, because...
We have to replace the sub-floor in our kitchen. Our kitchen floor, well, it's lumpy. We also have carpet from the 1980's. Not as pressing of an issue as the lumpy kitchen, but still, it looks shitty. So we're looking at about $5000-$8000 for the carpet alone, and we haven't even got an estimate on the kitchen yet. Money tree, where are you??!

My 11 year old Exploder with over 150k miles on it is on its last leg, but I just paid $240 to put new brakes on it. Remember, the cheapest vehicle is the one you already own. Hopefully the problem is something minor.

I agree with dorky dad. Keep the car and get i fixed up and use the money on the house. At least that in investment in the long run youknow? used car isn't. Unless the damage too fix the car is more than what it's worth keep it until you can't any longer.

It actually would have been $640 to fix everything, and even then the mechanic said that all of the wiring was a total mess. We opted to just pay $300 for them to fix the one wiring problem that was making it not run at all. So now it runs, but it runs like an old jalopy. We're going to donate it to a charitable organization, since it would be worth zip to a dealer. We were fortunately able to purchase the new family-mobile outright, so no additional car payment. :-)
