Checkup and Worry Time!

Keelan had his 6 month checkup today... he's still small, and now down to 3% on the weight chart. He hasn't doubled his birth weight yet. Doc is not worried yet, she says he's growing normally in every other way, but she wants to monitor it. Developmentally, he's right on.
I noticed that he had a bulge in his lower back a few weeks ago... the pediatrician said while his spine is a little prominent in that area, he doesn't show any signs of scoliosis. He does, however, have a dark hairy patch on his lower back, which is common in people with spina bifida occulta. She was not too concerned, because he has no problem with his legs (he'll be crawling soon), and from the reading I've done the mildest form is harmless and is really just a malformation of the vertebrae. She said she'd be willing to order and x-ray if I wanted. What I remembered after I got home is that Keelan has totally wacky bowel habits, that started when he was just a few weeks old. It's like sometimes things get hung up and he doesn't poo for days, but then he goes & it's normal (not constipated). Like last week, he had prunes & oatmeal for 3 days in a row with no poo, oatmeal on the 4th day, then suddenly on the 5th day he had diarrhea. One symptom of spina bifida is bowel or bladder problems. So, now I'm worried about it and I'll have to call the Dr. back tomorrow to see if she wants to do x-rays.
